House Portraits and Architectural Paintings

Over the years, I've had many people ask me for a painting of their current home or their first home or their child's new home or the church where they got married. Ah, the memories!

I work from your photos. I like lots of close-up details that can't be seen in one photograph, if possible.

My work is all by hand, not computer or AI.

See my SHOP for prices of various sizes:

Historic Greensboro NC
Print Series

I painted Greensboro scenes using photographs taken in 1910, 1918, 1949, and 1960, borrowed from the Greensboro History Museum, the Greensboro Merchants Association, and Jack Moebes, a retired photographer for the Greensboro Daily News and Record. Working with the help of the J. Harold Smith Framing and Art studio of Greensboro, NC, I published and sold limited editions of each. The first two editions were black and white prints which I painted individually, and for the next three scenes I published full color reproductions. Each of the five paintings was a limited edition of between 100 and 200 prints. As of today, most of the original series have sold out, but a few are still available at various art venues. I am selling newer prints. See the Shop on this website.

Creating accurate paintings had its challenges. The black and white photos were grainy, and I couldn’t see all of the names on the store signs. I needed to know what stores were in that block the year the photographs were taken. But I didn’t have the exact year. So I went to the library and looked through city directories and telephone books to narrow down the locations of particular stores during certain years. Color was another issue. I wanted to put some color into the cars, but what colors for what vehicles? I consulted some car enthusiasts – my brother-in-law included - who would tell me things like, “Ford didn’t make that color until such-and-such a year.”

West Davie Street, Raleigh NC

Raleigh NC was my home for several years. This is a 10"x13" print of an original pen and ink drawing that I drew in 1984. It is an accurate view of W. Davie Street, as you stand on Dawson St. looking East on Davie.

I have fun looking at this drawing and remembering how downtown Raleigh used to be when I was working there in the 1980s. Davie Street is one of the few streets downtown that is not a one-way street. That's how I could always get where I needed to go – I'd drive to Davie Street and avoid the one-ways! Geez. That was lifetimes ago!

I have the original drawing for sale for $250, and prints at varying prices.
